There is a good reason that school systems throughout many nations of the globe require at least a quarter of a person’s life span to be spent in some form of schooling and learning. The importance of education cannot be stressed enough, and it has been clinically proven time and time again that the quality of life of an individual who has completed a given amount of time in school is significantly better than an individual who did not complete the same amount of schooling. Some degrees are relatively easier to achieve than others, but again, there is a direct correlation of the yearly incomes between individuals who achieve a certain level of degree compared to those who have not. Though there are always exceptions to the rule, it is generally accepted that the longer an individual stays in school and acquires more knowledge, the higher levels and positions they can reach, along with the higher incomes as well.

The study of the mind, also known as psychology, is a field of study that is a perfect example of hard work and effort being rewarded in the long run. A psychology degree is one that requires a lengthy and arduous academic career, for psychology degrees from an undergraduate program are relatively useless and often seen as lacking or incomplete. A true psychologist usually pursues a master’s or doctorate’s psychology degree all throughout graduate school, and even after achieving graduate level psychology degrees, hands on experience and field work are necessary for a respectable and wealthy position. Many undergraduates looking to go into the field of psychology will complete the undergraduate study program with a bachelor’s general psychology degree. Psychology is a field of study that can be quite extensive and wide-ranging, and there are numerous amounts of specialized fields that psychology can branch into. Generally, a psychology degree from an undergraduate study program will not specify the particular subfield of study. Psychology degrees go more into detail starting from graduate school, as grad school students pursue the precise field of study they find the most interest in. In order to be considered a professional psychologist, a Doctor in Psychology degree (Psy. D.) or a Doctor in Philosophy degree (Ph. D.) is required by many states in America. Both of these psychology degrees are highly prominent achievements, and the minor difference is that those with a Ph. D. are authorized to publish official research findings and also teach at a college or university level.

Though psychology degrees may require some time and effort, along with dedication and passion, the rewards of being a psychologist can be quite gratifying and worthwhile. The field of psychology is a social and interactive one by nature and being a psychologist will require a tremendous amount of patience and diligence. Many people pursue a psychology degree in hopes to help a fellow human being, and for good reason. It is a very rewarding feeling to know that you have truly touched another human being and helped to improve their quality of life significantly.

There is a countless amount of specialty fields that general psychology can branch out into as well as a plethora of reasons and uses for any given field of psychology. Perhaps one of the most practical and functional uses that psychology can serve is for the health and wellness of a human being. The mind of a human being is an exceptionally powerful tool that many people fail to realize. There has been research and experiments done to clinically prove that the mind is capable of extraordinary feats when really put to the test. The phrase “mind over matter” can really truly apply to a majority of situations that may induce stress and anxiety upon an individual. Health psychology is a specialized field of psychology that mainly focuses on how human behavior, thought processes, and even emotional states are affected by health and wellness, or even illness. Though a majority of the subcategories of general psychology have some part in dealing with the health and wellness of the human mind, health psychology really goes into detail and specifically examines the intricate nature of how thoughts and behaviors interact and correlate with health and wellness, and particular illnesses, both of the mental and physical nature.

Once a mere facet of clinical psychology, health psychology has now evolved into its own recognized specialty subfield of general psychology. In fact, many of the specialty categories of psychology have stemmed from clinical psychology, as this is one of the most common and widely practiced types of the social sciences. On top of evolving into an independent field of study, health psychology also branches out into different subfields, including community health psychology, clinical health psychology, and even public health psychology. The various branches of health psychology all involve the health and wellness of the respective practices. As with many other practices of psychology, health psychologists work in conjunction with other specialized psychologists such as clinical, child, educational, and counseling, to name a few. The information and data uncovered by health psychologists are often of great value to the other fields of psychology, and when all the different subfields work in unison, the preservation of the health and wellbeing of the human mind comes relatively simpler and more efficient. To most, if not all, individuals, the health and wellbeing of their mind and body are very important priorities, and healthy psychology plays a huge role in publishing research findings that can benefit the general public. One of the main objectives of a health psychologist is to recognize what kinds of behaviors promote good health and wellness and to identify those behaviors that lead to illness and disease.

The health and wellness of your body, mind, and soul are essential aspects of living a happier and longer life. There are several publications that focus strictly on health psychology and many psychology journals that offer sound advice on improving the quality of life in any given situation. Even a simple query on a search engine online about health psychology can lead you in the right direction of enjoying health and wellness.

As an introduction to psychology, you will have to be able to open your eyes and might even have to alter the way you currently view the world. Psychology 101 is another term referring to the basics of psychology. Before you may be thinking of choosing psychology as a career path, you will most definitely want to be sure of your choice by understanding psychology 101 through an introduction to psychology. Because psychology is such a general topic, many people tend to get overwhelmed simply at the thought of it. Through the introduction to psychology, you can break it down to simple basics in order to get a better grasp at the topic. Like many other areas of study, psychology 101 can be used as a stepping stone for you to delve into more difficult and complex areas of psychology.

As mentioned before, you will first need to open your eyes. This means that sometimes you have to think differently than what is considered a general and normal reaction. You will be studying through psychology 101, the way that the human brain works and behaves. From the introduction to psychology, you should be aware of where the term ‘psychology’ has originated from. The term ‘psychology’ is originally from the Greek term ‘psyche logia.’ The translation of ‘psyche logia’ into English would be “the study of the breath, spirit, and soul.” Psychology 101 is so important throughout the daily lives of mankind. Psychology can explain many mysteries through tying the theories of many different biological and philosophical studies together.

Introduction to psychology cannot bypass the fact that many people generalize that psychology is easy and it basically only requires common sense. This statement is completely untrue and falsified. Due to the fact that psychology is directly related to science, there is no way that it isn’t scientifically proven through the use of scientific methods. As a psychologist you should also be open to many different solutions to one problem. Try to think of possible solutions from a biological point of view, evolutionary point of view, cognitive point of view, behavioral point of view, and a humanistic point of view.

Psychology 101 will also show that there are more than a few subdivisions within the broad field of psychology. Through the introduction of psychology you should take advantage and dip your foot into as many different subdivisions as possible. From there on you can make you own decision on what you would like to study further. Many people generalize the study of psychology to involve crazy people getting medical attention that is more than necessary. This has no quickly become a myth due to the fact that psychology is sought out for many different reasons aside from therapeutic reasons. Psychology 101 is needed for children in kindergarten, grade school, high school, college, hospitals, organizations, and even government offices. Psychology also has provided a great sense of medical relief in being able to treat people with a multitude of different mental disorders.

A field of psychology that is known to connect how the evolution has caused specific triggers within the human behaviors through different tests and theories is known as evolutionary psychology. This category of psychology studies the ways that certain evolutionary standards have influenced the way that people feel, think, and behave. Evolutionary psychology has developed a certain area where their primary focal points of studies lie. These important aspects of study involve the evolution of how people mate, how people build their anger, how people are able to have sympathetic emotions, and how people find different ways to communicate with each other.

Evolutionary psychology is a field of psychology that has been becoming more and more popular within the research aspects of psychology. Much of the research behind this field generally pertains to the evolution of human genetics that influences their survival rates. This has also brought an equally increased amount of attention for the study of the human aging process. The way that human’s age and what occurs throughout that entire period of a lifetime is what might be able to show exactly how and why the evolution happens the way that it does. Evolutionary psychology is constantly looking at the many conflicts that occur throughout the different periods of evolution.

This field of psychology is generally not as difficult as other aspects of psychology and therefore intrigues many people to want to study it throughout their entire life. The beginning studies of evolutionary psychology go all the way back to when humans were not even able to verbally communicate with each other. Although it may be simple to begin with as you move up further along the timeline where humans become more intricately developed creatures; your research theories will become more and more complex. The survival methods of humans will change as the surrounding situations change. Evolution will show how the human mind will grow along with the complex situations that arise and must be solved in order for human survival.

Evolutionary psychology also involves the psychological studies of the evolution of animals as well. Although they are not as complex as humans, it is an area that requires a lot of time and dedication because we are not able to physically feel what they are thinking or feeling. As a fellow human, you could relate to the studies of human evolution. You can relate to how you feel towards your family, your surroundings, and your daily battles. Through studying animals; you will be dividing them with those that are predators and those that aren’t. The way that animals behave and the way animals use their survival methods adapt to their constantly changing environment is a very exciting area of study. You will be able to see that through these studies you can learn why humans and other animals behave the way that they do in certain situations. The study of evolutionary psychology is never-ending as there are always new things to learn about the human behavior.

The social sciences are an ever expanding field of study. As long as human beings are evolving, developing and advancing, the social sciences will always be progressing and growing just as well. Psychology is perhaps one of the more common social sciences, and already, there is a countless amount of careers in psychology that an individual can decide to go into. Psychology careers are a very social and interactive field of occupation, and psychologists are almost always working closely together with a patient or a client, depending on which one of the specific psychology careers that is being practiced. Careers in psychology are not easy to come by. An extensive amount of studying is required all throughout undergraduate programs in college as well as graduate courses in graduate school. All psychologists who consider themselves professional have graduated with either a Doctor of Psychology degree (Psy. D.) or a Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph. D.). Both of these doctorate degrees require a great deal of concentration and study throughout graduate school years. On top of the large amount of studying and research that needs to be done, psychologists are usually exposed to clinical psychology work during their graduate school years to gain some insightful and helpful experience for when they decide they want to open their own independent practice. Many psychologists decide to stay with a certain clinic and practice careers in psychology within the clinic or hospital for several years before running their own practice.
As mentioned above, most, if not all, psychology careers start off in a clinic or a health center as a clinical psychologist. This experience within a controlled environment of a medical center is very helpful and valuable to a prospective psychologist who is hesitant or doubtful about which of the careers in psychology they want to pursue. Due to the nature of the very broad and general subject matter of psychology, psychology careers can range from virtually anything, from careers in psychology dealing with just children, to psychology careers that focus mainly on those with mental disorders and conditions such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, or even careers in psychology that deal strictly with counseling individuals with personal problems. Psychology careers that start in the clinic or health center as clinical psychologists are not uncommon to see as well, as many careers in psychology start in clinics and stay in clinics.

Psychology, in the most fundamental sense, is the study of the human mind. In order to effectively study and learn about the human mind, communication between the psychologist and the client is of utmost importance. Many people decide to pursue careers in psychology because of the very social and interactive aspect. If you happen to be an individual interested in psychology careers, keep in mind however, that this is a very important job in that complete strangers are willing to trust you enough to divulge personal information and problems. Many psychologists also hold responsibility for individuals with mental disorders, and this is just as important. The rewards of a career in psychology however, are very gratifying; to know that you have been able to really reach out and help someone is worthwhile.

If there is just one constant concept that never fails throughout the life span of a human being, it is change. The processes of the human mind are truly a remarkable phenomenon and the constant development and progression that occurs throughout the years in a human’s mind and body is nothing short of exceptional. Developmental psychology is a specialized subfield of psychology that focuses mainly on what the name suggests, the psychological changes that are brought about by a number of reasons throughout the lifespan of a human being. Initially, a developmental psychologist was predominantly occupied with concerns and matters of newborns and toddlers because of the amazing rate of development that infants often illustrate. Extensive research and experiments have proven that the practice of developmental psychology should consist of all the psychological changes that happen from birth all the way to death. A developmental psychologist is now responsible for the study of methodical and regular changes of the human mind and the various phases of development throughout specific time frames on an average human life expectancy.

Developmental psychology may be a specialized subfield of psychology on its own however; the focus of a developmental psychologist can be narrowed down even more into further subfields of psychology. Along with a few other specialized fields, developmental psychology is an interesting choice of study because of the mixture of an applied science and a research science. In other words, a developmental psychologist can gain new grounds and discover new information about developmental psychology either by working and interacting firsthand with clients and patients, or through doing research and studying past findings and making relevant correlations. Developmental psychology also aids many of the other categories of psychology, as information and data that is uncovered by a developmental psychologist can be utilized by those studying child psychology, educational psychology, social psychology, and even forensic psychology. More specifically, a typical day of research done by a developmental psychologist can widely range from information about motor skills, language, memory, cognitive processes, and even emotional development. Developmental psychology also deals with issues such as the age old subject matter of nature versus nurture. Other issues that a developmental psychologist may encounter are the effects on the environment on the upbringing of a child, learning through knowledge versus learning through experience, or reasoning behind several different behaviors in regards to interacting with other people.

Compared to other specialty subfields of psychology, the scientific study of the growth and progressions of the human mind, also known as developmental psychology, is a fairly recent field of study. There is a ton of information to be gained from the work of an efficient and adept developmental psychologist however. Data that is compiled through research from developmental psychology have enabled other fields of psychology to make relevant connections and correlations that lead to groundbreaking advancements of various social sciences. Developmental psychology may be a relatively new study, but the findings and concepts are undoubtedly going to be around for generations to come.

People tend to consider the study of cognition to be more related to science, but it actually ties into a very important field of psychology known as cognitive psychology. This field of psychology involves human cognition which is the study of how the human mind physically processes information. The working of the human mind involves steps on how humans think, how they perceive information, and how they are able to remember the things they learn. Cognitive psychology has the main purpose of studying the way that humans obtain, process, and retain the information they are taught. Learn what exactly you need to know for cognition related studies in this field of psychology. Maybe you have what it takes to make cognitive psychology your field of expertise.

If you break down further how this research is done; as a cognitive psychologist you will be required to study and research how people are able to memorize certain pieces of information. Research will also be done on how people can improve on their memorization skills. Cognition will also include providing research on how accurate people are when they are making decisions and how that aspect of the brain can be improved upon as well. Cognitive psychology also includes researching methods on improving school curriculums in order to increase the learning capabilities of students. All of these different studies of research that are being conducted will help with the betterment of our society. Through enhancing the learning aspects of the human mind through cognitive psychology, we will be able to improve the precision and effectiveness of the human mind.

Although cognition was not heavily considered to be very important in the past, it is becoming recognized as the key to many things when it comes to the learning process of students. Because cognitive psychology was always a step behind behavioral psychology, not as much time was spent on doing research with how and why students are attentive at times and not at other times. Not as much time was spent doing research on how students are able to memorize and how they are able to solve problems with the education they have learned.

Cognition also includes the use of different researching strategies to come up with theories of the behaviors of the human mind. You should decipher if you want to major in cognitive psychology by deciding whether it appeals to you the thought of researching linguistics, artificial intelligence, and behavior neuroscience. Cognition is an area of study that is more interesting than people take it to be. Not only is the human behavior taken into observation, but also what mental processes are happening at which specific mental state. Because internal mental processes are so difficult to observe, you must have the patience to dig deeper through the appliance of scientific theories and different research aspects. If you have the knack for engineering, science, art, and any form of design or architecture; you just may have what it takes in the critical thinking aspect to master cognitive psychology.

Forensic psychology is an area of psychology that involves legal and political aspects. A forensic psychologist is more than necessary in many courts. The reason for this is because they help in the accurate evaluation of the mental conditions and states of whoever is standing trial. This is necessary when the judge is trying to come to a conclusion on an important judgment. The evaluations of a forensic psychologist will be used to help make a fair decision on the outcome of the trial. Forensic psychology also involves the process of having to do research ventures on the behaviors and reactions of the jury and whoever stands witness with their testimonies. There are many psychologists in this field that have also much experience and knowledge in legal areas as well as psychological areas. Forensic psychology takes a keen eye and much skill; therefore is a highly demanded field of psychology.

A forensic psychologist will have to take what they have studied about psychology and apply it to legal and criminal aspects such as investigation of any laws that have been broken by a criminal. Another reason why forensic psychologists have become more popular is because of their dramatic and important roles they tend to play on TV and in movies. You must understand that this is a dramatization and not completely precise. Although forensic psychology does involve analyzing a criminal and perhaps taking on some exciting cases; it does not mean that you can predict and know the mind of a criminal. This field of psychology is more scientific than thought of and that method of science is applied to legal issues within the civil and criminal courts.

A forensic psychologist will possibly be opportune to be occupied with many civil court disputes such as custody battles, civil lawsuits, and insurance claims. You may also be required to work within a family court by offering counseling. Through the counseling you offer as a forensic psychologist you might be required to do a custody evaluation for the child, provide an evaluation on visitation risks of children, and also examine any reported accounts of child abuse. If you will be working within a civil court, there are different criteria you will be required to fulfill from if you were to be working at a family court. The forensic psychology work you will need to do will incorporate evaluating the capabilities of criminals, look at things from different perspectives, and also be a psychologist to the victims of these crimes. Forensic psychology used in a criminal court will require you to determine the mental competence of criminals, speak to anyone who has been witness to the crime, and also do evaluations on any adult or juvenile offender.

You may want to take all of the aforementioned facts into consideration before deciding to become a forensic psychologist. Keep in mind that you will be very social in this field and will be working with a number of others on a team in order to complete what is required of you.

The fundamentals of abnormal psychology build up from the basic foundation of psychology. From the basics of psychology you will delve into more specific criteria such as abnormal behaviors and psychopathological issues. Abnormal psychology may seem like a specific topic but it can actually cover many different kinds of psychological disorders that range from obsessive compulsive disorders all the way to depression. There isn’t really an ‘abnormal psychologist’ per say because most medical professionals in the psychology department are required to have the fundamentals of abnormal psychology under their belt. There are many different medical professionals that specialize in other areas such as therapists, clinical psychologists, and counselors incorporating abnormal psychology into their medical practice.

Many people have the misconception when it comes to abnormal psychology because of the term abnormal. It does not mean that everything pertaining to this field of psychology is weird or in a negative connotation. The fundamentals of abnormal psychology simply have to do with any irregularities outside the human norm. For any one person who is ridiculously ingenious to another who is abnormally underperforming could be considered a typical study for abnormal psychology. Just because you could be considered to be an understudy of this field of psychology that doesn’t necessarily mean that is a bad thing. If you look at the fundamentals of abnormal psychology you will see that there is a bell curve that is used as a standard measurement tool. The people who are considered to be ‘normal’ will fall toward the middle of this bell curve near it’s’ peak. For those who are considered otherwise and could be applied to abnormal psychology will be towards the outer edges of this bell curve. This bell curve is also referred to as the ‘normal curve.’

Whether your situation is bad or good, the fundamentals of abnormal psychology will require that your focal point be on how severe the amount of distress is upon the person to cause their abnormal behaviors. Because abnormal psychology requires the measurement of something that is unknown and you are trying to find out why there is an irregularity; there isn’t exactly one set way to go about your psychological researches. You must make a differentiation when it comes to any irregular behaviors as to whether it is happening due to a mental disorder or whether it is simply due to the circumstances of that specific person’s current life.

When it comes to the fundamentals of abnormal psychology you will learn that it is important to look at your research more than once and try many different tests to make sure that you don’t get diverse results that are contradicting. Your testing methods for this research should incorporate the studies of human behavior, the cognition of the human mind, and the medical histories of that person. All of these abnormal psychological disorders are affected by these three different criteria. Providing your abnormal psychology study with these facts as well will help you to better understand why such erratically unfit behavior is occurring.
